About Cassava Sciences, Inc.
Cassava Sciences, Inc., formerly known as Pain Therapeutics, Inc., is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company based in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1998 by Remi Barbier, the company focused on developing pain management therapies. In 2019, it rebranded to Cassava Sciences, shifting its focus to neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease.
The company's lead therapeutic candidate was simufilam, an oral drug intended for Alzheimer's treatment. But, in November 2024, Cassava Sciences discontinued its development after Phase III clinical trials failed to show clinical benefit.
In June 2024, Hoau-Yan Wang, a scientific advisor to Cassava Sciences, was charged with fraud related to research on simufilam. Subsequently, in July 2024, CEO Remi Barbier and Senior Vice President Lindsay Burns resigned. In September 2024, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed fraud charges against the company and its former executives. A proposed settlement included fines totaling $40 million for Cassava Sciences and additional fines for the individuals involved.
As of December 2024, Cassava Sciences has no approved drugs or active clinical trials. The company's future remains uncertain due to the discontinuation of its primary drug candidate and recent legal challenges.
